AI Didn’t Build It. It Let Me Build It.
The bottleneck was not writing the code.It was knowing what needed to exist.
What happened
I built working internal software without becoming a traditional software engineer first.
AI helped write code, inspect files, find errors, and turn decisions into functioning interfaces.
But it could not decide what the system needed to do.
It did not know which number mattered.
It did not know which exception would break the process.
It did not know what information people were missing, what language they understood, or what decision the page needed to support.
Those answers came from knowing the work.
AI made the construction faster. It did not supply the judgment behind the construction.
What changed
I stopped thinking about AI as something that replaces expertise.
In this kind of work, it gives expertise a new form.
A person who deeply understands a process can now test an idea, build a working version, and learn from it without waiting for every technical dependency to become available.
The code matters.
But the code is not the beginning of the system.
The understanding is.
What I’m keeping
I will use AI to shorten the distance between a well-defined problem and a working solution. I will not confuse its ability to generate the implementation with the human responsibility to decide what should be built.
