The Dashboard Wasn’t the Product
The dashboard was the interface.The decision was the product.
What happened
I was building a planning view that combined current work, future demand, available capacity, and timing.
At first, the work looked like a dashboard project.
It needed cards, tables, filters, totals, and a way to adjust the plan.
But the most useful question did not come from any individual chart.
It was:
What are we not doing?
That question changed the purpose of the system.
The goal was no longer to display everything that had been planned. It was to make tradeoffs visible before they became surprises.
What changed
I stopped judging the work by how completely it displayed the available information.
A dashboard is useful when it helps someone make a decision they could not make confidently before.
The charts, filters, and tables are only the interface through which that decision becomes possible.
What I’m keeping
Before building a dashboard, I will finish this sentence: “When someone leaves this page, they should be able to decide ______.” If I cannot complete that sentence, the dashboard is not ready to be designed.
